Inlays & Onlays

If you have an area of decay or breakage that is too large to treat with a simple filling, but not extensive enough to require a full crown, Dr. Ellison may recommend an inlay or onlay. Inlays and onlays are a common dental restoration used as a more conservative treatment option than a crown, as they do not require the removal of healthy tooth structure to be placed.

Inlays are generally smaller and repair damage contained within the cusp (outer ridges of the tooth), while onlays are slightly larger and repair damage that extends beyond the cusp. Rather than putting an artificial cap (crown) over a damaged tooth, inlays and onlays supplement the natural tooth structure. Inlays and onlays allow us to conserve your natural smile for as long as possible with a minimally invasive solution to strengthen and fortify the tooth while repairing damage and preventing further decay.

If you’re looking for the most conservative way to repair a tooth, we would love to discuss your options with you in a comprehensive consultation to see if an inlay or onlay could fit your needs.

The benefits of inlays/onlays include:

  • Strong, durable & natural looking
  • No removal of natural tooth structure
  • Fortify natural tooth
  • Repair breakage & prevent tooth decay

If you have a tooth that is badly decayed or has been broken, and is past the point of repair with an inlay or onlay, you may require a crown. Crowns are tooth-shaped caps that are fitted over any remaining healthy tooth structure to restore the tooth in form and function.

At Susan Ellison Dentistry & Cosmetics, we use only the most advanced technology to give our patients the most durable, natural-looking restoration that blends in and functions seamlessly with your smile. We use high tech 3D imaging technology to take digital impressions (a much more pleasant experience than sitting with goop in your mouth) which are then converted to precision digital models to give you the perfect crown the first time.

The process of having a crown placed usually requires two office visits. Your first visit includes digital impressions, as well as preparation of the tooth and placement of a temporary. Your impressions will be sent to our off-site lab to be created, and you will return a couple weeks later for the final placement.

If you have a tooth that is broken or decayed and are in need of a quality restoration to repair it in form and function, we would love to speak with you about getting a beautiful new crown with Dr. Ellison.

If you’re missing a single tooth or multiple teeth, you may be a perfect candidate for a bridge. Bridges consist of one or more fabricated teeth, usually anchored in place with the help of crowns on either side. Fixed bridges do require healthy teeth on either side to secure. Bridges can also be removable to fit the individual patient’s needs.

At Susan Ellison Dentistry & Cosmetics, our bridges are custom made from a beautiful and resilient tooth colored porcelain to mimic your natural teeth in form and function. If you’re suffering from missing teeth, replacing them is essential in restoring balance back to your smile including your alignment and your bite. Bridges do require some removal of healthy tooth structure to place the crowns on either side, but the result will be a fully functioning, fully integrated, natural smile restoration.

If you’re missing a single tooth and are a good candidate for dental implants, we would recommend a dental implant with a full crown on top, as opposed to a bridge, in order to conserve your natural surrounding teeth for as long as possible. We highly recommend dental implants for preserving gum tissue and jawbone health, while offering a sturdy anchor for a permanent restoration.

If you’re missing most or all of your natural teeth or living with ill-fitting dentures that rock and slip, we would love to help you secure your smile and invest in your future with our modern denture options. Our dentures are precision crafted with advanced digital technology for the most life-like fit, feel and function.

If you are a candidate for dental implants, our best recommendation for you is implant supported dentures. Dental implants are the only way to replace the root of a lost tooth, which is an essential component of a healthy, functioning smile. We do offer traditional dentures and partials that sit on top of the gums, which can help you eat, speak and smile with confidence again. However, without a tooth root or a dental implant, eventually, the underlying gum tissue and jawbone will begin to deteriorate which can cause premature aging and that sunken face appearance. Once you’ve lost enough jawbone, you may no longer be a candidate for dental implants.

Implant supported dentures offer all of the wonderful benefits of dental implants for your oral health and facial structure, while securely anchoring your dentures in place. Implant supported dentures are sleeker and less invasive than traditional dentures that include more synthetic gum tissue and cover the roof of your mouth. Dental implants lock dentures in place so you never have to worry about them slipping. Implant dentures can be cleaned and maintained just like natural teeth – you might even forget you weren’t born with them!

  • Clean & maintain like natural teeth
  • Enjoy your favorite foods
  • Speak & smile with confidence again
